- - - - Even though God has forgiven their sins he wants them to make up for the things they have done wrong.
      - This is a cleansing process, where the effects of sin are removed so the person can feel happy in the presence of God
      - The presence and overwhelming love of God makes some people ashamed of there wrong doings in life.
      - Catholics believe the process of purgatory can be quickened by the prayers from those still alive
    - - Hell is a state of eternal separation from God
      - Christians believe God does not send people to hell but people send themselves by not accepting God.
      - If people are judged unfavourably they will enter hell
      - People in hell are aware of what they have thrown away, and live in a state of frustration and anger at themselves.
    - - In heaven, Gods love removes all cares and worries.
      - God respecs people free will therefore he asks them to join him in heaven.
      - Heaven is the state of eternal happiness in the presence of God
      - If people are judged favourably they will enter heaven.
    - - Particular judgement
        
        When God judges someone on a personal, individual basis. This means they are judged on all actions during their life.
        
        Results in people going to haven, hell or purgatory.
        
        Happens immediately after a person dies

        Christ will come in glory at the end of time and judge the whole of creation
        
        After this happens, the Reign of God will be established and everything made perfect. Those who have been judged favourably by God will remain with him in this perfect creation.
        
        Happens at the end of time
    - - Many Christians don't believe in purgatory. They believe people will be with God in heaven or separated in hell.
      - Some Christians belief that judgement doesn't happen straight after death. Instead all people wait in their graves for the second coming of Christ , when then they will be judged.
      - All Christians believe in resurrection and heaven
    - - Not something to fear, start of eternal life without limitations of the earthly body.
      - While the body dies the soul lives on

      - Soul is judged by God and sent to heaven hell or purgatory

  - - - In the book of revelations seven angels blow trumpets to signal the end of the world and Christ's judgement
      - One angel is holding a small book with names of those who are going to heaven, another is holding a larger book with names of those going to Hell.

        Shows they believed in Jesus. A reminder of the belief that Jesus died so everyone would be able to experience eternal life In heaven.
      - In the middle ages, monuments were often decorated with skeletons and other symbols of decay
        
        Reflects that no matter how important or wealthy the person was they face death and God's judgement just like everyone else.

        Helps mourners to reflect on the peace and beauty of heaven.
      - Quiet reflective spaces
        
        Help people to mourn for their loved ones in peace in a place where they feel close to them.
    - - Inscribed with the letters "RIP"
        
        Stands for rest in peace, hoping the person is enjoying the peace and happiness of eternal life in heaven.

        Indicates the person believed in Jesus
        
        Expresses hope that they will resurrect with Jesus to eternal life
      - Angel carved on some of them.
        
        This angel will present them to God to be judged, and ask for a merciful judgement.
        
        Reflects the fact that all people have a guardian angel.
  - - - Hell is a place of torment where people are cut off from God
        
        The torment and suffering shown by the rich man pleading for some water; he says that he is in "agony in these flames".
      - Wealth can make it easier to forget the needs of others
        
        The rich man "feasted sumptuously everyday" but didn't share his food with Lazarus
      - Showing love and kindness to others will lead people to heaven
        
        By not showing love and kindness to Lazarus, the rich man went to hell
    - - A rich man who had everything he ever wanted. Who would not give to the poor, not even to Lazarus who lay at the gates of his house.
      - When both men died, the rich man went to hell and Lazarus went to heaven .
  - - - Was a medieval writer who claimed to have had visions from Jesus, she asked him why there is sin and hell. Jesus replied...
      - "It was necessary that there should be sin; but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing should be well"
      - "All shall be well" because sin will be defeated and all things will be made perfect at the end of time . The whole of creation will be brought together in harmony and reconciled with God.
      - The first phrase reflects the teaching that sin is necessary because God has given humans free will. If people are able to make free choices for or against God sin has to exist.
    - - As the Son of God, Jesus was able to destroy the power of sin and death which had disrupted God's perfect creation. Jesus' death and resurrection helped to restore harmony to the world.
      - The whole of creation will be fully restored and made perfect for the end of time.
      - Sin broke the harmony, throwing the whole of creation out of balance.
      - God the Father created the universe through God the Son. He made all things to be perfectly balanced in humanity
  - - - Commendation of the dying
        
        May receive their last holy communion. Shows Christ is with them on their journey to new life.
        
        May repeat promises made at Baptism. Reminded of their faith in God, gives them confidence in the hope they will experience God's love in heaven.
        
        A dying person may hold a crucifix, to remind them they are sharing Christ's death
    - - The funeral mass
        
        Priest holds a mass, called 'requiem' which is Latin for rest. Whole mass centred around praying that the deceased person is now resting with God, with all sins forgive.
        
        Readings focused on the effects of the resurrection of Jesus, reflects that Christ's resurrection made life after death possible by opening up heaven to those who accept God.
      - The committal and burial or cremation
        
        A prayer is said for the mourners, reflecting hope they will meet the deceased person again in heaven.
        
        At the burial/cremation the Lord's prayer is said, there are prayers for the persons eternal happiness with God. Reflecting the belief the deceased person was a child of God who has hopefully been returned to his loving care.

      - Reception of body
        
        Body taken to church in coffin, represents deceased person being taken back to God.
        
        Coffin sprinkled with Holy Water, reminder of Baptism. The person was baptised into Christ's death and now joins in Christ's resurrection.
        
        The coffin is placed beside the lit Pascal candle, showing the light of the risen Christ is shining on the person.

      - All life belongs to God
      - All human life is holy and sacred
      - People have a duty to give the ill and elderly all the care and support they need.

    - - Suffering is apart of being human but may be reduced by medication
      - It lowers the value and dignity of life- all life should be valued and respected, even if the person is ill and suffering
      - Suffering can be seen as a way to share in the suffering of Jesus on the cross
      - Only God has the right to end a life
      - It is considered murder and morally unacceptable
