Inflammation (5 classic signs (Redness, Heat, Swelling, Pain, Function…
Inflammation
-
Biochemical mediators
Kinin system
Biochemically mediates inflammation by increased dilation of the blood vessels at the site of the injury & increasing the permeability of local blood vessels
Clothing mechanism
Functions primarily in the clotting of blood, which helps stop bleeding at site of injurty
Compliment system
Composed of plasma proteins that are activated in a cascading fashion, with one protein activating the next in the series
Others
Cytokines, prostaglandins, lysosomal enzymes, endotoxins
-
Types
Acute
Minimal brief injury, short, lasting few days. Tissue may return to normal state or start repair immediately
Chronic
Injury to tissue continues & inflammatory is long lasting. May last weeks, months or forever. Continually changing in response to injury.
-
Processes involved
Margination
Movement of WBC, towards blood vessel wall
-
-
cells involved
Monocytes
Second WBC to show up to injury, turn into macrophages
-
Regeneration & repair
Regeneration: slight damage, area may return completely to normal structure and function
-
Hyperplasia, hypertrophy, & atrophy
Hyperplasia: increased cells, hypertrophy: enlargement of cells, atrophy: decrease in sizs, function of cells
