Butler has been criticised for being too academic (Nussbaum, 1999), not socially specific or real enough (McNay, 1999), ignoring material and experiential aspects of identity (Grant, 1993, Kotthoff and Wodak, 1997 and Hekman, 1999) and for rejecting the idea of identity-driven movements which include suffragettes, gay liberation movements and civil rights movements.
