FRACTURE
DEFINITION
it is a break in the continuity of a bone, caused by applied force during trauma, disease pathology, or prolonged pressure on the bone
TYPES OF FRACTURES

compression fracture
when the vertebral column has been compressed as a result of a fall from a height in an upright position and the vertebral column absorbs the shock in the fall
depressed fracture
this applies to the skull, where a blunt blow causes a dent that presses on the brain substance

ASSESSMENT AND FINDINGS

pain and tenderness as a result of muscle spasms in response to the trauma and movement of severe parts
loss of function, disturbance to the normal structure
deformity, as a result of an unnatural position of the bone

PATHOPYSIOLOGY

resulting in the periosteum being stripped off from the bone and blood vessels supplying the bone being severed

CAUSES
trauma, as a result of direct blow or crush as in motor vehicle accidents
degenerative disorders such as those responsible for pathological fracture , which occur in older women

AMPUTATION
refers to complete removal of a limb as part of treatment in a severely injured or diseased extremity which poses a danger to the patient

manage post operative bleeding , repack the wound if dressings are soaked
