Segregation
Definition: «Segregation (racial) is the separation of people into racial or other ethnic groups in daily life.”
The segregation in the US included separation of access to facilities, services and opportunities (education, housing, medical care, employment and transportation).
This racial segregation was done away with during the Civil rights movement, that was a movement with the goal of securing equal rights for all the Americans.
Equal opportunity
Definition: Similar treatment for all people (no matter race, color, age, gender, national origin, religion, or mental or physical disability).
Before the Civil rights movement the US did not have equal opportunities. The African-Americans were treated different than the white-Americans because of their race
The American Dream
Definition: «The belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone.»
