Pelvis & Perineum Muscles
Perineum
Ischiocavernosus
Movement
Action: Maintain erection & pushes blood into genital
Innervation: Muscular (deep) branch of perineal nerve, a branch of pudendal nerve ( S2-S4)
Attachments
Origin: Internal surface of ischiopubic ramus & ischial tuberosity
Insertion: Crus- inferior/medial aspects & membrane
Superficial Transverse Perineal
Movement
Innervation: Muscular (deep) branch of perineal nerve, a branch of pudendal nerve ( S2-S4)
Action: support & fixes perineal body/pelvic floor to support abdominal pelvic viscera; resist increase in intra-abdominal pressure
Attachments
Insertion: posterior border of perineal membrane
Origin: Internal surface of ischiopubic ramus & ischial tuberosity
Bulbospongiosus
Movement
Innervation: Muscular (deep) branch of perineal nerve, a branch of pudendal nerve ( S2-S4)
Action: support & fixes perineal body/pelvic floor; assists in erection (male & female)
Attachments
Origin: perineal body
Insertion: perineal membrane (male); pubic arch & fascia of corpora cavernosa of clitoris (female)
Deep Transverse Perineal
Movement
Innervation: Muscular (deep) branch of perineal nerve, a branch of pudendal nerve ( S2-S4)
Action: support & fixes perineal body/pelvic floor to support abdominal pelvic viscera; resist increase in intra-abdominal pressure
Attachments
Origin: Internal surface of ischiopubic ramus & ischial tuberosity
Insertion: perineal body & external anal sphincter
External Anal Sphincter
Movement
Action: constricts anal canal
Innervation: Inferior anal (rectal) nerve, a branch of pudendal nerve (S2-S4)
Attachments
Origin: skin and fascia surrounding ans
Insertion: perineal body
External Urethral Sphincter
Movement
Action: Compress urethra; also in females- compress vagina
Innervation: Dorsal nerve of penis or clitoris, terminal branch of pudendal nerve (S2-S4)
Attachments
Origin: Around urethra (compressor urthera portion only)
Insertion: surrounds urethra superior to perineal membrane
Pelvic Walls & Floor
Floor
Coccygeus
(ishiococcygeus)
Movement
Innervation: Branches of S4 & S5 spinal nerves
Attachments
Origin: Ischial spine
Insertion: Inferior end of sacrum & coccyx
Levator ani *
(puborectalis, pubococcygeus, & iliococcygeus)*
Movement
Action: Resist increase in intra-abdominal pressure & support pelvic visera
Innervation: Nerve to levator ani (branches of S4), inferior anal (rectal) nerve, coccygeal plexus
Attachments
Origin: pubis (body); tendinous arch of obturator fascia; ischial spine
Insertion: perineal body; coccyx; walls of prostate or vagina rectum, & anal canal
Walls
Obturator Internus
Movement
Action: Thigh external rotate
Innervation: Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1, S2)
Attachments
Origin: Pelvic surface (ilium & ishium), obturator membrane
Insertion: Greater trochanter (femur)
Piriformis
Movement
Action: Thigh external rotate & ABDuct
Innervation: anterior rami of S1 & S2
Attachments
Origin: pelvic surface (S2-S4); superior margin of greater sciatic notch & sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion: Greater trochanter (femur)
