Health condition
Cardiovascular/heart disease
Cardiovascular disease refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can potentially lead to heart attacks and/or stroke. It is caused by fatty plaques being built up in the arteries. The plaque build up causes the artery walls to thicken & stiffen up , which slows down the blood flow through the arteries.
Fatty plaque can be caused by having high cholesterol, being obese, unhealthy diet, hereditary and also lifestyle
The effects that cardiovascular disease can have on people are short term effects like swelling, dizziness and stress. And can also long term effects like heart attacks, heart failure, strokes and these can lead to death.
Atherosclerosis is the most common type of cardiovascular/heart disease. And is causes by unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and being obese
186,000 people are living with cardiovascular/heart disease. 1 in 20 adults
Maori adults are more than twice as likely to die from cardiovascular disease compared to European New Zealanders.
65% of NZ adults are obese (hence more likely to be affected by cardiovascular disease ). and out of this, 2/3 are Pacific Islanders.
Kiwi women are more than 4 times likely to die from cardiovascular disease than breast cancer
Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer/cause of death for women ( even though it is often seen and thought to be a male problem)

Complimentary Medicine; It is used ALONG with WSM. The purpose of CA is to provide comfort or enhance the process of WSM. eg accupuncture after surgery, chemotheraphy + detox, yoga.
Alternative Medicine; It is used INSTEAD of WSM. eg instead of going through a surgery for spine injury, you can go to the chiropractic. (surgical vs non surgical )

Western Scientific Medicine
it is evidence based medicine. They are used to diagnose and treat a specific illness usually and is a less holistic approach to treating the body.

Traditional Medicine
It is based on beliefs and experience from different cultures and religions.
eg. Acupuncture, Ayurveda , Naturopathy
Philosophy; It is a more holistic approach to treating the body as it aims and helps to treat the body as a whole rather than a specific illness ( like WSM ). It balances the whole body.
