Class Reflection and Action Plan
Philosophy of Technology Integration
Over this course, I have definitely learned how to integrate technology in my classroom in different ways. Before, I never really had a big interest in using it creatively but now I am excited to begin using all of the different resources we have learned. I have tablets students can use in the classroom so I plan on having the students use quizlet live, kahoot! and other websites like it for informal assessments. Especially throughout the first weeks so that I can see what the students know and what I will be needing to focus on a lot as a refresher from kindergarten. Both of those websites I believe are good for the first grade level because they are not hard to use.
Enginering Design Process
The way I see myself using the EDP is mostly throughout math and science. I really want to allow my students the opportunities to think critically and go above and beyond what they are used to. One of the TEKS in first grade science 1.6b is about using a magnet to push or pull an object. That TEKS is a great opportunity to incorporate an EDP because they can explore several ways to make the object move by using the magnet.
Acquire. Analyze. Act.
Looking back at the lesson plan that I made for AAA I can see the benefits that are involved with using technology. For example, I did a pre assessment using quizlet live to see how knowledgable students were on coins and then used that data for the whole group instruction. Using kahoot as a checkpoint and then analyzing that data to see exactly how I need to split the class up into small groups really helps. The data allows me to see which students can complete activities like lesson paths as a form of enrichment and which students need to work with me in small groups.
PLN
Expanding my PLN on twitter allowed me to find new resources about ed tech. I really liked going through the feeds of each of the people that I followed because they share some interesting and useful articles. I don't really use twitter but now that I followed these users, I want to start using it more because it will help me develop myself better as an educator while helping my students do better in the classroom.
Blended Learning
I really like the week that we went over blended learning. The video we watched from home and the small groups we did in class allowed me to enjoy the activities because it gave a sense of independence with the fact that I could work at my own pace. In my classroom I can incorporate blended learning by using small groups and incorporating technology in one or two stations. The students will feel like they can work at their own pace and at the same time feel like I can trust them to be independent.
Models of Technology Integration
For my work as an educator I really related to HACK. The reason for this is because I can see myself starting off with my first grade students very structured when it comes to technology but eventually I will start allowing them to have choices for how they do their assignments with technology. I want to get to the point where I do a short mini lesson and incorporate small groups in majority of content time so by the end of the year, my students will definitely be highly independent. Since the beginning when we learned about the different models, I related to HACK the best because of my teaching style and wanting my students to get to the point where they can be independent and I am mostly a facilitator.
Digital Citizenship
As a teacher there is a great responsibility to teach the students about digital citizenship. Many of them do not have parents that will teach them about it or monitor what they do online so it is highly important that they learn that at school. Before starting the use of any technology in the classroom, I will have them do a few of the lessons that were found on Be Internet Awesome. By using those resources, they will learn how to navigate the internet correctly and safely. Once I make sure that the students have gained knowledge and understand digital citizenship , then I will slowly start to incorporate technology and the use of websites in the classroom under my supervision.
Creative Products
By creating digital products, the students will be able to go deeper into the content. When we were asked to create one ourselves over news, it was surprising to me to see just how different news is broadcast to us based on the news station we are looking at. Activities like these can be used in all content areas to deepen the thinking process of the students because they are doing something they have never done before. It's time to really get deep into things instead of going over the surface of each topic. Having students create digital products will also show their understanding because they will have different visuals.
Action Plan
This school year I am excited to begin incorporating technology with my students. I feel that it will be an exciting experience for each of them because it will be something that they did not do much in kindergarten. I will start by teaching about digital citizenship and its importance. Once the students understand, then I will slowly begin incorporating different websites and resources for lessons, assessments and ways that they can submit assignments. As the year progresses, I will begin to allow them to have the choice of using the websites they want in order to submit their work. I will work with parents so that they are aware of the tech we use in class and so that they can help their child at home if necessary.
When we have TEKS where I feel we can incorporate EDP, then I plan on using that and having my students go through the process. This would fit well with the blended learning because I can find ways to incorporate both of them at the same time.
Overall, the students will be able to choose from any website or resource they want as the year comes to an end because they will be knowledgable of my expectations as well as knowledgable of the responsibility it takes to use the internet.
