Staffing of anaesthetic departments
Overview
Departments should be staffed adequately to provide a safe high quality clinical service, supervise trainees and effective management
Staffing: Process of acquiring, deploying and retaining a workforce of sufficient quantity and quality
CST
Allocated by department director so all departmental goals achieved and individual's expertise best utilised
CST: TIme spent performing duties other than patient care
Teaching, QA, research, CPD etc.
Medical staff:
DOA
Deputy DOA
SOT
Specialist anaesthetists
Staffing numbers
Minimum
One specialist anaesthetist
At least 1 FTE specialist anaesthetist for each trainee
No more than 2 non-specialist anaesthetists (including trainees) for each FTE specialist anaesthetist employed
Workload calculations
Adequate to avoid fatigue and meet hospital, CSE and leave requirements
Trainees:
require clinical supervision
Service time depends on educational needs, experience of trainee, roster pattern
Supervision must comply with ANZCA
