Hope
the handmaids tale: Moira gives offred hope. The letter offred finds- dont let the bastards bring you down- her own secret. her own way of escape gives her hope- how she mentally rebels against the regime gives her hope- using language. mocking things- like aunt Lydia gives her hope. However, there is also a lack of hope- she doesnt like her body- she doesnt see her body belonging to herself.
war of the worlds: ironic that the curate doesnt bring hope- when he is a symbol of religion. the artilleryman brings hope- he makes the narrator realise that he is not the last man- but then that hope fades when the narrator realises he is lazy. there is a lack of hope in book 2, chapter 8, dead London- where there is a deathly atmosphere.
criticising human behaviour
the war of the worlds- wells criticsing society- thinking they are superior to all other races- so they dserve martians to invade. when they are invaded, society breaks apart- fight with eachother, instead of helping one another.

the handmaids tale- 1. lack of hope- adversity makes offred hate her body and herself- sees herself as a cloud and like her body is separate from her sense of self. which gives her a lack of hope-. 2.offred manipulates language and uses word play- the wall- child like language etc. 3. adversity makes them turn against eachother- jealous of Janine, and in the prayvaganza- handmaids act like animals and fight eachother- primal.
the war of the worlds: 1. lack of hope- narrator detached from society- lonely. the chapter dead London- lack of hope. 2. escaping adversity- focusing on the Martians and their internal autonomy- using vivid imagery- when he should be trying to physically escape the house- just mentally escaping instead. 3. turning against eachother- curate vs narrator and society going into decline.

power
the handmaids tale- Offred gaining power by using language to escape and being a rebel gives her power. Trying to gain power over aunt Lydia by repeating her irrational comments and mocking them. she also tries to gain power over the commander- in scrabble she gains power over him by using complexed vocabulary and again uses language to claim a voice. She also tries to dehumanise him by calling his penis a "slug's eye". However, she lacks power because ultimately he has control over her- he is using her- he wouldn't get in trouble but she would- so he controls her. she also lacks power because she feels as though her body is separate from her mind- she doesnt like her body. offred tries to gain power over others- like Janine- jelousy- she objectifies her
war of the worlds- narrator almost tries to gain power over evryone else- by showing off his intelligence and detaching himself and criticisng the rest of society. the Martians have power over society because they are more advanced than humans- narrator does try to highlight the power of the Martians. humans think they are more powerful than Martians because they see themselves as superior race. however, the curate lacks power. society loses power when martians invade- become a mess.
