Functions of Parliament

belong to single political party/independent candidates

Nominated MP (NMP)
hold seats for 2.5 years
appointed by special select committee
Non Constituency MP (NCMP)
Unsuccessful opposition party candidates who obtain the highest votes of at least 15% will be offered NCMP seats.

speak at least one of the official langugages
resided in Singapore for at least 10 years

vested in The Supreme Court and the State Courts.
Meaning of Jurisdication
Criminal Jurisdiction
- refers to court's power to hear criminal cases. ie actions brought by the State against a person for a particular crime.
Civil Jurisdiction
- refers to court's power to hear cases involving civil claims brought by private parties eg action in contract, tort, debt collection.
Original Jurisdiction
- refers to court's power to hear a case when it is first being tried. ie cases that has not been heard by any court before.
Appellate Jurisdiction
- refers to court's power to hear a case on appeal from a lower court.
