Step 1
- WHO do I teach?
Study students':
a. interests
b. learning profiles
c. readiness
d. any special needs???
Step 2
- WHAT do I teach?
– Includes curriculum topics, concepts, or themes
– Reflects state or national standards
– Presents essential facts and skills
– Differentiates by preassessing student skills and understandings, then matching learners with appropriate activities
– Provides students with choices in order to add depth to learning
– Provides students with additional resources that match their levels of understanding
Examples of differentiating activities:
— Match vocabulary words to definitions.
— Read a passage of text and answer related questions.
— Think of a situation that happened to a character in the story and a different outcome.
— Differentiate fact from opinion in the story.
— Identify an author’s position and provide evidence to support this viewpoint.
— Create a PowerPoint presentation summarizing the lesson.
Step 4
- What do I expect?

Tends to be tangible: reports, tests, brochures, speeches, skits
Reflects student understanding
Differentiates by providing challenge, variety, and choice
Examples of differentiating the end product:
— Read and write learners write a book report.
— Visual learners create a graphic organizer of the story.
— Auditory learners give an oral report.
— Kinesthetic learners build a diorama illustrating the story.
Step 5
- WHERE do I teach?
The conditions for optimal learning include both physical and psychological elements. A flexible classroom layout is key, incorporating various types of furniture and arrangements to support both individual and group work.
Examples of differentiating the environment:
— Break some students into reading groups to discuss the assignment.
— Allow students to read individually if preferred.
— Create quiet spaces where there are no distractions.
Step 3
- HOW do I teach?
PROCESS
– Varies the learning process depending upon how students learn
– Reflects student learning styles, special needs and preferences
– Refers to how students make sense or understand the information, ideas, and skills being studied
Examples of differentiating the process:
— Provide textbooks for visual and word learners.
— Allow auditory learners to listen to audio books.
— Give kinesthetic learners the opportunity to complete an interactive assignment online.
— Allow learners to discuss within the group sharing their thoughts
— Prepare the animated slides and quizzes for interactive and visual learners
