Overlapping is a term that emphasizes the usefulness of multiple perceptual systems in helping a client describes an event. You may find a client talking about a problem with a spouse in rather abstract terms. Ask that client for a concrete example of the problem, then follow up with questions about how the spouse and situation are visualized, what sounds may be heard, and, finally, what feelings are generated in the client. If you are emphatic and use the concept of overlapping sensitively, you may obtain a much deeper understanding of what the client is saying. You will find that you have recreated much of the problem and anchored the client’s reaction to that problem to the “here and now” in the counseling interview.
