Communicable diseases and the anaesthetist
Aim to protect patients and colleagues
Vaccination + assessed for immunity post Vax
Hand over duties if temp. impairment of judgement/ability (stress, tired, ill)
Take responsible steps to stay healthy
Standard universal precautions should be taken
Transmission based precautions (eg TB)
Exposure prone procedures (EPP)
Risk that injury to physician may result in exposure of patients tissue to blood of physician
e.g. chest tube placement, line placement
Most surgery is EPP
Should have regular checks every 1-2yrs
HEP B - prohibited EPP unless v low HBV DNA titre
HIV - prohibited
HEP C - prohibited
Non exposure prone procedures
Where hands and fingertips of physician are visible and outside patient's body at all times, and internal exams/procedures do not involve possible injury to physicians hand
e.g. cannulation/venepuncture, CVC (if not tunnelled), intubation
HEP B - prohibited if high HBV DNA titre
If HIV +ve, HBV +ve, HCV +ve must inform employer...
