Sunni and Shi'a Muslims
-
Muhammad was the founder of Islam and after he died Muslims had to chose a new leader (caliph), the next 4 caliphs were Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali
some Muslims had wanted Ali to be the first caliph and thought the first three didn't deserve the role, others said Ali shouldn't be the caliph at all
after Ali died two groups formed:
- the Sunnis who accepted the next caliph after Ali
- the Shi'as who followed Ali's descendants

the different branches of Shi'a Islam split off after disagreements about the line of Imams, the twelvers are the largest branch
twelver Shi'as - believe in a line of 12 imams with the last one in hiding and who will eventually return, are led by religious scholars while they wait for the return
seveners Shi'as - thought the 7th imam should be Isma'il (the elder brother of the chosen one by the twelvers), they believe each imam can select the next one
