How might I create a way where the cafes in my school don't need to throw away the left over food?
What types of food is wasted
How many kilograms of food waste does the cafes in school create?
How might this food be preserved to be kept for longer?
What types of food is majority of this waste?
What other organisations are striving to help solve this problem
How long can hot food be left out for?
What type of food can be left out for 1-2 days that the cafes sell?
What organisations can come and pick up the food before it goes bad? - I know a cause called Ozharvest and they take leftover foods that are still edible, from aeroplanes and gives them to people who may not have proper food to eat.
What are some tips on telling someone whether food is still edible?
Due to health regulations, curtain foods cannot be left out for long periods of time. If this food is given to someone else after lunch time when it is still good to eat, this food can be saved from being put in the bin.
What are these health regulations and who set them?
Any sign of contamination or spoilage means that the food needs to be thrown away.
Any food not served from the kitchen can be covered and refrigerated, then reheated and served later. Food already reheated cannot be heated again – for example, a curry cooked the night before and refrigerated, then reheated and served the next day in the setting cannot be reheated again and served later.
Do not reheat cooked food more than once. Discard food that is served and not eaten. Discard any food that was not served but has been out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.
What are some ways of preserving foods?
Fridge - I know that if you wrap something in plastic it can last longer in a fridge.
Freezer - If you freeze something it lasts for longer because no bacteria is able to get through to it.
Preservatives - It also depends on what preservatives are used in the food, the stronger the preservative, the longer it can last for
Excluding air- by leaving food in airtight bags, the food can be preserved for longer instead of rotting straight away
Things that school does that are helping the environment:
Compost bins
The Artemis cafe is using paper straws and encouraging people to bring their own cup

Possible solutions
Idea: I could contact a charity or organisation that specializes in food to come and collect the leftovers and drop them to homeless people or even homeless shelters to make a new meal with them.
Difficulties: It will be hard to use the health regulations as an advantage to me because if I were to get a delivery system to work to food would have to be taken to the location very quickly.
Idea: We could move the compost bins into more popular places so people notice it more and use it
Difficulties: Many people will not be aware of this an there will need to have several announcement.
