Risk factors
Stimulation of normal hormonal function as evidenced by accelerated growth during pregnancy and regression postmenopausally.
Pathophysiology

they may cause pressure in the pelvis resulting in, pain, urinary frequency, urgency and constipation
the intramural fibroids may also intefere with uterine contractions and cause abnormal bleeding menstruation leading to anaemia and inability to conceive
if the fibroids are located in the uterine cavity,the risk of infertility, placenta ubruptio and premature labour are high
Medical management
management depends on the size, location and symptoms. surgical procedures done are;
myomectomy, this can be done vaginally, abdominally of through laparoscope, where the uterus size is less than 16 weeks pregnant.
treatment include, administration of oestrogen-free hormonal therapy including contraceptives to control the growth of fibroids
hysterectomy this has been the main therapeutic modality, because not only does it relive the symptoms but it eliminates the chances of recurrence

Definition
Tumours of the uterus are also known as fibroids or growth in the myometrium. Fibroids may remain in the muscle wall or be found in uterine cavity or on the uterus. the size ranges from small nodular structure to that of a pregnancy of a few weeks.
