causes
ovarian cancer happens when cells divide and multiply in an unregulated way.however exactly why this happens is not clear
pathophysiology
the cause of ovarian cancer is not known, but the condition tends to run in families, the risk is high in women with with a history of postmenopausal breast or ovarian cancer in first- or second-degree relatives.
in cases where the cancer is related to inheritance, there is also a tendency for the ovarian cancer to occur at a much younger age than usual. The inheritance of these mutations is dominant, making the risk quite high in affected families.
assessment findings
on palpation the abdomen would be distended and tight from the fluid, and solid ,irregular, fixed pelvis mass in the lower abdomen would be suggestive of ovarian malignancy
management
for the pre menopausal patient, hormonal suppression with oral contraceptives may be used for two months.Where all signs positive for ovarian cancer, an exploratory laparotomy is recommended. This procedure is both diagnostic and therapeutic and it may be done together with a radical hysterectomy.
