3.) Media outlets should avoid using competitors research as a secondary source in their report. This makes them look like they are falling behind or can't develop their own research. By having a research of your own , primary or secondary, could have helped them deliver a total different perspective on the message, unlike their competitors.

Perhaps the source was right, and law enforcement just did not want this information to get out to the public.
Their reliable source could have gotten the information from another unreliable source, or believed in the speculations of the investigations and went along with it.

2.) These incidents demonstrate that at times, the media just wants to get the story first instead of delivering the truth and inform the people.
1.) My opinion is that at many times we should do our own research, rather than just believing on the news. If they can't even take the fault for their mistake on the report, they cannot expect the people to believe in them afterwards.
