DEFINATION
Extra uterine pregnancy, the fertilized ovum fails to reach the uterus but becomes implanted elsewhere, in the most cases the site is in the uterine tube but sometimes it is the peritoneal cavity.
-
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY: common site of ectopic implantation is the fallopian tube. At about the 6th week of pregnancy, the tube ruptures, causing a surgical emergency. This is a serious condition and may be accompanied by severe pain, shock and intra-abdominal haemorrhage. Prognosis is good if diagnosis and treatment are early, poor if treatment is omitted or unduly delayed
