5-D Counselling Model
1. Develop relationship
Involves developing mutual understanding openness & acceptance between counsellor & counselee. This rapport building is essential to initiate counselling. It's important because it allows counselee to assess counsellor by reading verbal & non-verbal messages given during the session.
It answers 2 questions: Counsellor able to empathize with counsellee? Counselee deem counsellor as genuine?
2. Define problem
Involved understanding with the help of counselling, the counsellee's own situation,feelings,strengths & weakness,problems & needs. This involves collection & classification of information about current life situation of counselee & their reason for seeking counselling
3. Determine the goals
Define the desired outcome of the counselee after the end of counselling through exploring possible solutions & formulating action plan to achieve specified outcome

Skills
Listening (Give the person full attention to what they're saying/doing, valuing them as worthy individuals + gives client control of content,pace & objectives + actively listen & reflect your thoughts back to them)

Questioning (Uses open-ended questions to clarify his/her understanding of what the client's feeling)
Paraphrasing (Repeat & feeding a shorter version of their story back to client to make sure that the client knows their story's being listened to.)
