Cropping Patterns/Seasons & Major Crops
Rabi Crops
Rabi crops are sown in winter (Oct - Dec) & harvested in summer (Apr - June)
Eg: wheat, barley, peas, gram, mustard
Cultivated in north & north western parts of India
Eg: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir
Reasons for the success of Rabi crops:
Precipitation in winter from western temperate cyclones
Success of green revolution in states such as Haryana & Punjab
Kharif Crop
Kharif crops are sown at the onset of monsoon (June) and harvested in Sep - Oct
Eg: Paddy, maize, jowar, bajra, tur, moong, urad, cotton, jute, groundnut, soyabean
Cultivated in north east & southern states
Eg: Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telengana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra along with UP & Bihar
Paddy has now become a commercial crop in Punjab & Haryana also
In Assam, West Bengal & Odisha, paddy is cultivated three times in year - Aus, Aman, Boro
Rice
It is th staple food for majority of Indians
India is the second largest producer of rice after China
It is a kharif crop
Requirements:
High temperature > 25C
High humidity
Annual rainfall > 100 cm
Rice is grown in the northern plains & in north eastern India, coastal and delta regions
In areas of less rainfall, rice is grown with the help of irrigation & tubewells
Eg: Punjab, Haryana, parts of UP & Rajasthan
Zaid Crops
It is cultivated in between Rabi & Kharif season
It is a short season in the summer months
Eg: Water melon, musk melon, cucumber, vegetables & fodder crops
Wheat
Second most important cereal crop
It is a rabi crop
Requirements:
Cool growing season & bright sunshine during the type of ripening
Two important wheat growing zones in India - Ganga-Sutlej plains in the northwest & black soil region of the Deccan
Major wheat producing states are Punjab, Haryana, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar, parts of MP
