- - - - Sometimes called herpes labialis, fever blister or cold sore.
      - Type 1 or type 2.
      - Clear vesicles located at the mucocutaneous junction of lips and face.
  - - - Apply prescribed ointments and give anaesthetics to sooth the lips as prescribed.
      - Advise the patient:
      - Not to break the vesicles.
      - Avoid irritating food.
      - Use protective ointments with sunblock
  - - - Herpes simplex virus (primary or secondary infection).
      - Exposure to sunlight especially after a short period of fever.
      - Upper respiratory infections, e.g. bacterial, fungal or viral.
      - Food allergies.
      - Emotional tension.
      - Opportunistic infections such as in immune-compromised patients.
      - May occur as vesicles singly or clustered.
      - Extreme pain.
- - - - Common in light or fair skinned people.
      - Appears as lip irritation with accompanying scaling and crushing.
      - Fissures occur with hyperkeratosis.
- - - - Overexposure to the sun.
      - Constant irritation such as smoking the pipe.
      - Immunosuppression
      - Syphilis
