What periods do historians use?
Prehistoric times - from the earliest times to 3000BC
Ancient history - from 3000 BC to AD 476 (Fall of the Western Roman Empire)
Medieval history - from 476 to 1453 (The Turks overthrow the Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire)
Renaissance, Reformation, The Age of Enlightenment and the rise if the West 1400 to 1789
Modern history - from 1789 (the French Revolution) to the present
Important Events
E.g the end of the byzantine Empire in 1453
E.g the television age: the space age: the Cold War
E.g. the renaissance, a period of 'rebirth' in the 14th-17th Centuries
Sometimes we date based on important events or periods

A family the ruled an area for a particular time period
E.g. the Han Dynasty in China
BC and AD
Before Christ

Same as BCE (before Common Era) and CE (Common Era)

Anno Domini (in the year of our Lord)
