FEEDING MODALITIES
ENTERAL NUTRITION
Delivery of nutrients directly into the gastrioibtestinal tract via feeding tube.
ADVANTAGES
Cost effective
Less likely to cause sepsis
Preserves the normal sequence of intestinal and hepatic metabolism
Maintain insulin/glucagon ratios
Maintains liproprotein synthesis
Stimulate gall bladder motility
Prevents biliary sludge and cholelithiasis
COMPLICATIONS
Tube obstruction due to pill fragments and lack of throurough flushing of the tube
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Aspiration
CARE OF THE PATIENT
Bed elevated during feeding
High fowler's position for intermittent feeding
Length of the tube confirmation
Tube flushing before and after feeding
Infuse the the tube thurough pump and monitor given amount
Secure tube properly
Wean from the fees gradually
Monitor stool for frequency and consistency
PARENTAL NUTRITION
It delivers concentrated solutions intraveneously maintain a patient's nutritional balance
INDICATIONS
Acute inflammation or malabsorbtion
Extreme hypermetabolusm from trauma
Patients on nil per os for more than 5 days
