TRIAGE: ONE TEACHER'S APPROACH
Read and evaluate student background information.
Meet & interact with students while watching carefully for any warning signs.
Provide preliminary academic assessment to compare students to grade level.
POOR PERFORMANCE: Make note of areas of weakness.
Meet with the support teacher, discuss and research, develop preliminary action/treatment plan, inform & involve parents.
Implement action plan.
Assess progress on action plan.
IMPROVEMENT: Continue to implement plan.
LACK OF IMPROVEMENT: Refer to special education department and recommend testing.
After testing has been completed make sure to follow up with the Special Education department and get any feedback on how to best support student in the classroom. Implement new plan.
EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE: Make note of areas of strength.
Meet with the support teacher, discuss and research, develop plan to create advanced learning opportunities for this student, inform & involve parents.
Use regular and challenging formative assessments to measure progress.
ON GRADE LEVEL -
follow the following steps in all other cases
Make note of any behavioral issues such as inattentiveness in class, inability to complete class or homework, excessive joking, excessive movement, 'rudeness,' etc.
No behavioral issues?
This student still needs your attention! Make sure to continue to provide opportunities for reflection on learning, engage with the student on a personal level and create an open classroom environment.
Behavior problems!
Identify the exact nature of the problem, meet with support teacher and discuss possible causes.
Meet with the student one on one and encourage the student to talk about what is going on in his/her life and how he/she feels about the class and content. Avoid accusatory language.
Create an action plan with support teacher based on mutual observations and student feedback.
