Students become self reflective and self guided in their text.
Learning to learn or to "want to learn" and "how to learn"
- Transacting with Text.
How are they being prepared to read text. What happen before, during, and after reading those text?
Concerned mostly with writing. Choose topics, refine, proofread, and edit the work they are doing.
Ideas are learned by reading, writing, talking, and text and supplemental material in every subject, not just a subject called reading.
Collaborative process. Students are learning through bringing their own experiences and formulating questions. Community of learning.
Learning about the writer
Four Lenses of Learning
Human - Feel confident and comfortable in their learning. They need to feel success and that they are working with others and responsible for the success for their peers as well. Communal success vs individual
Social -
Meaning
Language - Were they talking, reading, and writing, and listening and not just answering questions.
Sadly, very little progress in this type of learning as a nation. (20-30 year - reading scores stagnate)
Bully example.
How to select good text with meaning.
Hearing text read along and here intonation of the text. Discussing with one another and instructor. Sharing their questions and receiving feedback
Typical lesson - open book, read along, word by word. Too much focus on getting it right.
Should be thinking about each lesson that it includes the 4 lenses and use of text.
Have students draw what they read.
