Setting of the poem
Fear and Anxiety: "I hear you're asking all around, If I am anywhere to be found" Woman refusing to meet the man that had hurter her in the past, hiding from the man so that he couldn't find her
Place: Dark Room with a glimpse of light
Dark Room represents the situation the woman is in, where she was hurted so many times that she had to rethink about her whole situation and life, dark room to represent the darkness in her heart
Glimpse of light: represents the sense of hope that she has when she had decided to let go and stay strong for her own self
"Period of history": Poem is based on when the girl was deeply in love with the guy but was being cheated on multiple times, and the girl was hurt that the boy did not cherish the love that they have had. Quote "You Lost the love I loved the most", proves that the man will not get a chance from the girl again, like how they were in the past, as his unappreciative behaviour had lost the trust and love of the woman.
Depressing environment: "I learned to live, half alive" proves that the setting is extremely depressing, to the point where the author was being hurt so many times that she was living without purpose and she was living without happiness, on the edge of dying.
Period of nature : Night time of the day. The reason why this poem can be presented by the night time of the day is because most people think about problems a lot in the night time, and the night time can effectively present the darkness of the poem in this situation.
Pattern of imagery
Symbolism
Repetition
“who do you think you are”: Represents that the poet is tired of the man taking advantages of her and also taking her love for granted, after cheating her a lot of times and but ended up being forgiven every single time he had made a mistake
“I learned to live, half alive, and now you want me one more time”: represents that the girl had been through too much where she was living without full purpose, and she was not living in happiness “Half alive”: barely living, living in sorrow and deadful situation
"So don't come back for me"- represents how the woman is tired of the relationship and hopes that the man won't come back and find her again when the man is tired of the our woman, also represents the idea of the whole song, which is to "let it go" and move on onto better relationships.
"Scars"- represent broken hearts and the bad pasts that the woman had went through, and how she was being hurt so deeply that the things that her wound from the past is not curable
"Ghost"- represent how the woman had "died" for the man multiple times in the past. In terms of "died", it means that she has gave everything she can to the man but she got nothing but a broken heart in return.
Figurative Languages
Hyperbole
"I've learned to live, half alive": exaggeration of how sad the author is over the past toxic relationship that she had with the man. It's impossible to live half alive as humans are constantly in a living or dead situation. The use of "half alive" exaggerates the whole situation and make the situation depressing and sad
Connotation
"Running around Leaving scars"- "Running around" represents that the man had been cheating and breaking multiple women’s hearts, and by breaking hearts that are unhealable, it meant "Leaving scars"
“You’re gonna catch a cold, from the ice inside your soul” Connotation: ice represents coldness, which represents that the person is a very cold hearted and a person that doesn’t give out happiness or warmth to others;
"You're gonna catch a cold" one day karma will hit that person and he will realize how cold hearted he is, and how many hearts he had broken
"Continue to collect your jar of hearts, and tearing love apart" Connotation is used in this place as the man did not learn from his lesson. These two lines are used against him to say that he had atill continue to cheat around and tearing people's heart up when they've put 100% effort into the relationship.
"But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms" In this case, fall back into your arms represent going back to be together with the man, as "fall back in your arms" represents hugging, which also means going back together.
Metaphor
“Put the light in my eyes”: Light represents hope
Sound Repetition
Assonance
"You lost the love I loved the most" allows the audience to know that the author has now completely given up on the man that hurter her
"I wish I had missed the first time we kissed" allows the audiences to know that the author does not miss the person anymore and has no feelings for the person anymore like how she had in the past.
Rhyming
Overall no rhyme scene in the whole poem
“I hear you’re asking all around, If I am anywhere to be found”: represents that the man would still think that the woman would still give him a chance and be his lover again, but this song is about how Christina Perri had decided to stand strong for herself and say no to this toxic relationship. This shows that the man doesn’t appreciate Christina and by having these two important lines, it emphasizes the whole situation that Christina is in.
Overall, the song is well structured, with verses, repeated choruses and lines. It allows people to relate about the whole situation of Christina and it allows the audiences to feel the sadness that was being represented in the whole situation
