DEFINITION
A MEDICAL CONDITION WITH YELLOWING OF THE SKIN OR WHITES OF THE EYES, ARISING FROM EXCESS OF THE PIGMENT BILIRUBIN AND TYPICALLY CAUSED BY OBSTRUCTION OF THE BILE DUCT, BY LIVER DISEASE, OR BY EXCESSIVE BREAKDOWN OF RED BLOOD CELLS.
PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
MOST BILIRUBIN IS PRODUCED WHEN HB IS BROKEN DOWN INTO UNCONJUGATED BILIRUBIN(AND OTHER SUBSTANCES). UNCONJUGATED BILIRUBIN BINDS TO ALBUMIN IN THE BLOOD FOR TRANSPORT TO THE LIVER, WHERE IT IS TAKEN BY HEPATOCYTES AND CONJUGATED WITH GLUCORONIC ACID TO MAKE IT SOLUBLE.
