Special Education Process
Student displays signs or symptoms of a learning disability. The teacher observes and evaluates. The teacher can then make a decision whether to report it to parents and administration.
Inform parents.
Weekly call or report sent to keep parents updated about their child's education plan, progress, and what the child needs to do in the upcoming week.
Inform parents of assignments or tasks so they can provide assistance to their child.
Recommend a study schedule for the child at home to help the parents manage their child's at-home education.
Maintain a positive and encouraging dialogue with parents and also provide support and encouragement for the parents as well.
Inform administration - Either vice principal or special education director. They will observe and meet with the student in order to confirm or verify the teacher's diagnosis or to provide a more exact diagnosis.
Create an individualized education plan for the student.
Differentiated Instruction can take many forms. Here a few examples.
-Cutting the number of problems/ items that a student must complete.
-Allow more time to complete a test or assignment
-Have tests completed orally.
-Read tests to the student.
-Allowing the student access to classroom novels that are written in a condensed or abridged form.
-Oral presentations/ allow the student to complete the assignment to the instructor only or better yet, have him invite a few others that he is comfortable performing before.
-Provide options that include other options rather than the traditional written form:
-Preferential seating
Provide any counseling or one-on-one or group therapy that is necessary.
Inform other teachers.
Teachers can discuss at faculty meetings or privately to figure out the best ways to work with and help the student.
