Process to identify and help a struggling student :
Observations
Get to know the student.
Observe
them and
seek answers
to the following questions:
Ask the right questions:
Is the student having difficulty identifying and mastering the words, numbers or the task at hand? Is the student having difficulty staying on task? Are they having a hard time retrieving information, difficulty with listening and comprehension skills?
If the answer is no
, the student is not struggling,
no referral is needed.
If the answer is yes
, then proceed to nr. 3
3. Refer the student to the Student Advisory Team
The Student Advisory Team (SAT) is comprised of teachers and specialists from school. A teacher can refer a student to that committee and the teacher can explain the difficulty of learning that the student is demonstrating. Then SAT will suggest certain strategies that the teacher can try in the classroom
What if these strategies do not work?
4. Refer the student to be assessed for special education.
If the strategies recommended by SAT do not work then the child can be refered to be assessed for special education.

3.b. SAT Strategies can include various interventions and strategies depending on the observations of the teachers and other teachers who have this student in their class
3.aTime to talk to the parents or guardian
The teacher can educate parents about what’s going on at school. The teacher can invite the parents or guardian to come in and observe the students' behavior and also observe how the teacher is handling the issues in question. The parents or guardian can get ideas of what they can do at home. The teacher can give them literature to read on whatever the issue is to better understand their child.
Before the teacher does anything, the
First step
is always to
have a hearing and eye test
because sometimes a lot of these issues students are struggling with are because they cannot see and need glasses or there is a hearing loss that has not been identified yet. This needs to take place before a teacher identifies learning difficulties.
