Chapter 15:Clinical Examination: Gingival Assessment
Risk Factors for Gingival Assessment:
Poor home care
changes in hormone levels
systemic diseases
Reflection: Many people are at risk for gingival disease. I suffered from gingivitis prior to my knowledge on gingival disease
Clinical Assessment Procedures
Color
Visually inspecting the gingiva for health.
Signs of inflammation can be seen if color appear unhealthy
Increase in vascular will make the gingiva red/inflamed.
Contour
Contour determines the shape of the gingiva, specifically the marginal gingiva, whether it is bulbous or tighly fills the embrasure space
Consistency
Examined by light pressure on the attached gingival.
This measure the firmness of the gingiva
Texture
Assessed by drying the attached gingiva
whether the attached gingiva is smooth or if their is stippling. Healthy Gingiva has stippling
Size
Gingiva can be enlarged due to drugs or hormonal changes.
Bleeding
Bleeding of the gingival sulcus is examined when probing the periodontal pocket.
Also called BOP.
Reflecion
In clinic, we use all aspects of the clinical assessment procedure in order to determine whether the patient has healthy tissue or if it is inflammed. This includes Color, contour, consistency, texture, size, and bleeding.
