General principles
Recovery from anaes to take place under supervision in designated area
Should be close to where sedation/anaesthesia given
Trained recovery staff with ability to contact medical staff
Adapted to local requirements
Design features
Part of procedural suite, accessible to theatre
Must have evacuation plan
Operating theatre standard of ventilation
9m2 per bed/trolley with access to head
Sufficient room (at least 1.5 spaces per theatre - manage peak load)
Layout for staff to observe several patients at once
Each bed space to have: O2 outlet, medical suction, 2 x power outlet, lighting, facilities for equipment
Nursing station, utility room, storage
Facilities for scrubbing for procedures
Clock with second counter
Communication: emergency buzzer, telephone
Accessible to portable XR
Emergency power supply
Equipment and drugs
Each bed space to have: oxygen flow/delivery, suction, pulse ox, BP, Stethoscope, temp measurement
Within recovery area: means for manual ventilation with O2, equipment + drugs for intubation, Emergency drugs, V equipment, fluids and fluid warmer, Pain drugs, Syringes and needles, Patient warming devices, Ability to measure expired O2
Access to: 12 lead ECG, defib, nerve stim, chest drain, warming cupboard, fridge, light, surgical tray, ABG machine, diagnostic imaging services, apparatus for ventilation, monitors for direct ABP and CVP
Bed/trolley: Firm base and mattress, tiltable, easy to move, brakes, allow patient sitting up, side rails, IV pole, ability to mount monitoring
Staff
Trained staff present
Registered nurse in charge
Supervision for trainee nurses/inexperienced
Flexible nurse: patient ratio not>1:3
One nurse to each unconscious patient
Management and supervision
Written protocols
Routine for checking drugs and equipment
At least 3 peiple for transfers / lifting
Designated anaesthetist contactable
Records for obs
Remain until safe for discharge (criteria)
Anaesthetist should
Accompany patient until transfer to recovery area complete
Handover a sper college guidelines
Written and verbal instructions
Remain in vicinity until patient safe
Supervise recovery period and authorize discharge
Available for consultation if necessary
