STAGE ONE: SENSORI-MOTOR STAGE
- 0-2 years olds
- construct understanding of the world by coordinating sensory experiences and motor abilities
- foundation for cognitive abilities and growth through assimilation and accommodation
OBJECT PERMANENCE
the understanding that objects/events continue to exist even if they can no longer be heard, touched or seen
applies to babies who are younger or are 8 months old
GOAL DIRECTED BEHAVIOUR
the ability to behave in a purposeful manner in order to achieve a particular goal

STAGE TWO: PRE-OPERATIONAL STAGE
- 2 to 7 years olds
- represent the world with words (languages), images and drawings (symbolic).
- stable concepts are formed
- mental reasoning emerges
- can remember, imagine and pretend
- capable of imitating behaviours of others (observational learning!!)
- grouping of similar objects together
