Chapter 11: Treasuring God's Limits on our Lives
Intro Story
Sophomore year: My life was packed with ministry
Led to a place where I was exhausted
I was doing all these things for God, yet I was exhausted and confused.
Didn't know how to have fun
Life was so structured that I couldn't be as spontaneous
Have you experienced burnout?
Felt like you had too many responsibilities.
a lot of people have expectations for you
You have a lot of expectations for yourself
Rule of Life
A solution into knowing what to say yes to and what to say no to
Less is more
Saying no to good things helps us to say yes to the best things
We have problems saying no to good things
Relationships
People God has placed in your life to connect to. This is where you put your friends down
Rest
What do you like to do that nourishes your soul? What do you like to do for fun that is not related to your work? Sabbath is related to this chapter
Work
Things you are responsible to do. Paid or unapid responsibilities
Prayer
How are you communing with God? Related to the Daily Rhythms and Sabbath
Diagram is fluid: use it when you're making decisions in your life
Defining our limits
All of us have limits
Examples
Everyone is given 24 hours in a day
We can only be in one place at a particular time
We have a limited amount of energy before we get tired
Analogy: backpacking or luggage while travleing
Yet the Western culture screams to resist limits
First man on the moon
Western frontier
Next best phone, technology
Infinite scroll on social media
Our culture is such a go-go culture
God places limits in our lives to help us recognize our need for Him
2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Verse 7: lest exalted (pride) - thorn in the flesh
We don't know what the thorn of the flesh is
Verse 8: pleaded three times
Three times symbolic as many. Peter denied Jesus three times, Peter asked what to do three times
Verse 9: My strength is made perfect in weakness
It's in our limits that we recognize God's strength.
If we had no limits, we would be God
It's exhausting trying to be God
Many people have expectations of us and what they want for us. We all set high expectations for ourselves
The key thing is placing what God wants for us over what others want for us.
My story: chapel, first Service, worship music, glow. they might be good things, but did God want me to be weighed down with so much responsibilities?
Limits are gifts that pour from God's love
Satan story
Initial description of perfection: Ezekiel 28:13-15
Isaiah 14:13-14
Satan broke the limits God placed on him. He wanted to be God
Punishment: Cast out of heaven,
Isaiah 14:14, Ezekiel 28:16-19
It is a sin to break God's limits on our lives. In essence, we are trying to be more than God has created us to be. We are like Satan, trying to reach for more than we can possible handle.
Responsible To / Responsible For
Responsible TO others
Law of Power: You only have the power to change yourself or control yourself. You can influence others, but you can't change them. Only they can change themselves
Change your way in acting with others, so they will be more inclined to change their ways.
Mom situation with yelling in conversations
Ties into caring for others. We can be a listening ear and empathetic to others
Exception: Siutation with LLUC helping girl, but she went back to industry
