Endometritis
Risk factors
-
Childbirth and abortion, because the raw placenta site and the lochia both provide a suitable medium for the existence of microbes.
A long-standing contraceptive intrauterine device may be embedded in the endometrium, resulting in micro-organisms growing around it.
-
Menopause, with the resultant loss of the acidic environment in the vagina and menstruation.
Sexual transmitted infections are passed on during sexual activity. These include clamydia or gonorrhea, which cn cause an infection in the uterus lining.
-
Nursing managemt
The nurse should maintain intravenous therapy as prescribed, and administer prescribed medication.

Definition
This is an infection or inflammation of the endometrium caused by bacterial entrace through the vigina into the uterine cavity.
Pathophysiology
If micro-organisms gain entry into the uterine cavity, the infection is chronic. The exudate may accumulate to form pus resulting in a purulent malodorous vaginal discharge. A viginal swap should be taken to identify the infecting organism. A curettage may be more precise, as the nature of the tissue obtained may indicate atrophic changes as well as malignant cells.
