bloods - cholesterol, U&E, lipids
ADMIT
BP over 180/110, signs of papilloedema and/or retinal haemorrage

treatment
under 55 and not of black/afro carribean origin - ACE inhibitor or low cost angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIRA)
over 55 yo, or black/afro origin - calcium blocker, moderate low dose thiazide diuretic
persistently raised BP - systolic >140, diastolic >90
stage one hypertension - 140/90, Home BP monitor - above 135/85
stage two - ABPM 160/100, HBPM - 150/95 most days
primary hypertension - no identifiable cause (90%), secondary (10%) has cause
stage three/severe - systolic>180, diastolic>110

lifestyle advice, obesity, smoking, alcohol, stress management. Monitor response to treatment in 1/12, check renal function
