Bandura et al. - evaluation
Research method
Lab experiment - high levels of control, eliminates extraneous variables
Matched pairs - measured on aggression, each groups similar aggression levels
Low ecological validity as done in an artificial environment, it's not very realistic
Could show demand characteristics as doing what adults do
Sampling bias
All from Stanford University Nursey so hard to generalise
Difficult to generalise transmission of aggression
Equal number of boys and girls so more representative
Nursery attended by children of academics so not representative of the wider population
Data
Quantitative - allows us to easily compare levels of aggression in each condition
Qualitative - what the children said whilst being observed
No indication of what's happening in the minds of the children, in film can see children have powerful responses - could have known what thought and felt when hitting the doll
Reliability
Good reliability as very controlled and standardised procedure meaning it is replicable
Prior aggression also controlled by assessing each childs aggression and matching between groups
Reliability of observers assessed - had good inter-rater reliability
Validity
Low ecological validity as took place in an artificial environment
Bobo doll is meant to be hit so can't relate it to hitting a person as no emotional response or consequences
High internal validity as very standardised and high control
Ethnocentrism
Very ethnocentric as likely to all be white middle class American children as from Stanford University Nursery in 1961
Transmission of aggression is different in different cultures so it is hard to generalise this
Ethics
Protection - could have been distressing to children, didn't take aggressive behaviour away which could lead to behavioural problems
Children weren't debriefed
Parental consent would have been needed but it is not discussed
Not kept confidential - film of it
