Chaney et al. - evaluation
Research method (field experiment)
Advantages
Used controls to manage the influence of extraneous variables on DV - matched pairs to ensures responses were directly comparable
Disadvantages
Findings rely on self-report which is open to bias as participants might over report use of Funhaler to please experimenters
Sampling bias
Advantages
Random sample so no bias and representative sample
Included people from different socioeconomic and geographical areas
Data (quantitative)
Advantages
Can directly and objectively compare use of each device
Disadvantages
No qualitative data so had to assume that Funhaler is what encouraged better compliance
Reliability

Procedure and materials standardised so high levels of replicability
Participants given same instructions so reliable findings
Validity
Advantages
High ecological validity as fied experiment - took place in own homes as they went about their everyday lives
Disadvantages
Funhaler novel device so could have biased their questionnaire and created an order effect making participants more likely to report use of the Funhaler
Ethnocentrism
Advantages
Includes participants from a variety of backgrounds
Disadvantages
Could be other social and cultural influences that affect compliance that aren't looked at in the study
Ethics

Informed consent gained (from the parents)
Briefed of aims of study
Data kept anonymous
Children were protected from physical harm
