Grant et al. - evaluation
Research method
Lab experiment
Independent measures
IV's - silent vs noisy study, silent vs noisy test
DV - participants performance on short answer test and lutiple choice test
Cause and effect relationship established as study was highly controlled e.g. same instructions, all wear headphones
Sampling bias
Opportunity sample so not representative
Sample male and female and good age range (17-56) so more representative
Small sample of 39 and students so not representative of the wider population
Friends of psychology students so more prone to demand characteristics as may have worked out aim
Data (quantitative)
Statistics allow for easy comparison of conditions showing that although study and learning condition don't affect retrieval match or mismatch does
None of the participants views on studying in silence conclusion suggests preferable but perhaps student can't concentrate or can't work for as long as a result
Reliability
Good reliability as very standardised (headphones, same tape, procedure) ensured reliability and could be replicated
Reliability reduced as reading time could not be controlled
Similarity in pattern of results across test conditions also suggest results are reliable
Validity
Silent condition did have an effect but was only 30 minutes long may not generalise to longer periods of study. Boredom, day dreaming could reduce the time spent studying or its effectiveness
Experiment did represent the study and learning conditions for students well and material was more like course material than typically used in memory tests
Controls and use of realistic materials make the findings of the study more valid
Ethnocentrism
Is ethnocentric - sample all people from roughly same area, learning and memory may be different in different cultures
Ethics
Given enough information to give informed consent
Fully debriefed afterwards
Asked if they had any questions and were told of their right to withdraw
Were aware participating and were not deceived
