Baron-Cohen - evaluation
Research method
Advantages
Controlled setting and standardised procedures - viewed eyes for same amount of time (3 seconds), all photos black and white etc.
-
Data (quantitative)
-
Disadvantages
not very detailed, can't find out how participants feel when look at photos
-
Sampling
-
Disadvantages
Small sample size of autism and Tourette's group (16 and 10) which makes it harder to generalise to rest of population
-
-
Reliability
Advantages
High internal reliability as standardised pictures same size (10x15) and standardised instructions e.g. 3 seconds per picture so all had same experience
-
-
Validity
Advantages
-
Results from Eyes task supported by results from Happe's strange stories which established concurrent validity
Disadvantages
Low ecological validity due to high control and judging people's emotions based solely on their eyes is unrealistic
Ethnocentrism
Is ethnocentric as from Cambridge and London, geographically close locations, making assumption people from other cultures and countries would act in the same way
Ethics
Advantages
-
They experienced no distress beyond what they would in their daily lives (important as people may be more vulnerable)
-
