Piliavin - evaluation
Ethics
-
Protection - people observing felt anxious, could feel guilty if didn't help, could get injured helping them up
Deception - deceived by collapse of actor, not informed he was an actor or that he was okay
-
Debrief - not debriefed, eft in distress as didn't know taken part
Ethnocentrism
Very ethnocentric as conducted in single city and assumed findings could be generalised to other cultures
-
-
Research method
Advantages
Field experiment so natural environment, better ecological validity and less chance of demand characteristics
Disadvantages
Difficult to control variables, tried to put in controls e.g. age and gender of victim but not all conditions could be kept constant like number of passengers
-
Data
Quantitative - appropriate given aims of study as it makes it easy to compare the data, it also helps to establish cause and effect
Qualitative - in form of comments, was useful as indicator that people are responding by justifying why they're not helping
Reliability
Advantages
Standardised - how long before model stepped in, how collapsed etc. also had clear script as not everyone taking part in same trial
-
Sampling bias
-
Disadvantages
Taking sampe from those travelling between 11 and 3 leaves those at work or school under-represented
-
Validity
Advantages
Good internal validity - behavioural measures of helping behaviour have good validity as measuring actually helping not estimates of helping
