Womens Rights Issues
- No equal rights to divorce, inheritance or child custody as compared to men
- Child Marriage Rates have increased over the years due to laws failing to change in relation to age restrictions for marriage.
- Womens right to maternal care is limited - lack of legal protection also leaves them exposed to domestic and sexual violence
Freedom of Religion
- Government prohibits conversion from Islam and the proselytization of Muslims
- Reported isolated attacks on Jews and Zaydi Muslims felt targeted by government entities for their religious affiliation
Freedom of Press/Speech
- The Government holds a monopoly on all television and radio
- Government bans journalists for publishing incorrect information
Event Example: In 2001, journalists at the newspaper Al Shura received 80 lashes for defaming the leader of the country's largest Islamist Party
UNICEF has been able to verify that 2,500 schools today that are no longer serving for educational purposes. They were destroyed by the war or being used for military purposes, or for hosting displaced people.
