Why do we assume that all Muslims are extremists and harmful instead of individualizing those who cause destruction in our world?
media
Based on the article "The Muslims are coming!" Why Islamophobia is so dangerous, media such as news paper articles and digital media can have a big impact of the mentality of humans.
- However this information can be biased.
- Multiple articles published about Muslims are not objecive. Authors are being influenced by personal experiences, feelings or opinions about Islamphobia when considering and representing facts.
- Due to the great affect of media on people, many of us rely only on the information of these sources.
- As a result, the audience of the author will have the same mentality.
- This leads to blaming all Muslims for destruction, taking over others' jobs, homes and lives, and terroism instead of individualizing those who actually cause the negative impacts on society.
- For example, most of the media coverages about Muslims post 9/11, are often stereotypes that represent Muslims in an overwhelming negative light.
- Authors also use specific words to represent their biased opinions on Muslims and Islamphobia.
- These authors use words such as "militiancy" and "radicalism" to represent those of the Muslim faith.
- When authors write and report about destructive events such as terroist attacks, they often use these certain words in the title.
- By doing so, they are labelling everyone who is Muslim as an extremist and encourage their audience to think the same way.
This developes a "them vs. us" mentality and creates a low tolerance between those of a non Islam faith and Muslims.
- Many people also assume that all Muslims are extremists instead of individualizing those who cause destruction because many of us only learn about negative events caused by Muslims instead of learning about their culture in the media.
- We are not hearing enough about the positives that Muslims are doing in our world to create peace and justice.
- Instead, we are reading and hearing that Muslims are stealing our jobs, lives and homes and are causing terrorist attacks in our countries. We are orften misinformed about the truth and the media uses sensationalism to negatively influence their audience.
- Without knowing the positive impacts that Muslims are doing in our world and only educating ourselves on the destruction, we assume that all Muslims are extremists and cause harm.
