Sectors of Economic Activities
Primary Sector
Also called
Agriculture & Related Sector
When we produce goods by mainly using natural resources, it is called Primary Sector
Eg 1: To grow cotton, we depend mainly, but not entirely on natural factors such as rainfall, sunshine, climate and the product produced, cotton is a natural product
Eg 2: The Dairy industry depends on animals and fodder. The product milk is also a natural product
Eg 3: Minerals & ores are also natural products
It is called Primary sector as it forms the base for all the products that we subsequently make.
It is also called Agriculture & Related Sector since most of the natural products we get are from agriculture, dairy, fishing, forestry etc
Secondary Sector
Also called
Industrial Sector
This sector includes all activities in which natural products are converted into other forms through manufacturing or industrial activity
The manufacturing could be done in a factory, workshop or home
Eg 1: Using cotton fibre from cotton plant we spin yarn and weave cloth
Eg 2: Using sugar cane we make sugar or gur
Eg 3: We convert earth to bricks and use bricks to build buildings
As this sector is associated with different kinds of industries it is called industrial sector
Tertiary Sector
Also called
Service Sector
These are activities that help in the development of primary & secondary sectors
These activities do not produce a product but they support the production process
Eg 1: The goods that are produced in the primary or secondary sector has to be supported to the shops by trains or trucks -
Transport
Eg 2: Goods may have to be stored in godowns -
Storage
Eg 3: People have to talk on telephones or send letters -
Communication
Eg 3: To help production and trade money may have to be borrowed from banks -
Banking
It is called service sector as the activities in the tertiary sector generates services rather than goods
Transport, communication, storage, banking, trade are examples of tertiary activities
Service sector also includes essential services that do not directly help in production of goods
For example we require teachers, doctors
Personal services - washermen, barbers, cobblers, lawyers, people who do administrative & accounting work
Some new services are internet cafe. ATM booths, call centres etc
