Greed and Wealth in The Great Gatsby
CHARACTERS
Jay Gatsby - Important in the book. In love with Daisy and is a neighbor of Nick Carraway.
Nick Carraway - Narrator of the book and neighbors with Gatsby.
Tom Buchanan - Rude, arrogant man married to Daisy and having an affair with Myrtle.
Daisy Buchanan - Married to Tom and loves Gatsby.
Myrtle Wilson - Having an affair with Tom while married to George Wilson. Later dies in a car accident by Daisy
George Wilson - Married to Myrtle and ends up killing Gatsby and himself after finding out his wife died.
Meyer Wolfsheim - Partnered with Gatsby in business
Jordan Baker - Golfs and in love with Nick
CHAPTER SUMMARIES
Chapter 1 - Nick moves to NYC and moves in a house beside Gatsby. He has dinner with Tom and Daisy in East Egg.
Chapter 2 - Nick goes to the city with Tom and meets Myrtle.
Chapter 3 - Nick is invited to Gatsby's party. He arrives and is unable to find Gatsby, until he realizes that he is actually talking to him.
Chapter 4 - Nick is invited to have lunch with Gatsby. He learns that Gatsby is in love with Daisy. Nick also has a dinner date with Jordan.
Chapter 5 - After Nicks dinner date, he tells Gatsby that he will invite Daisy over so him and Daisy could talk.
Chapter 6 - Gatsby hosts another party and invites Daisy and Tom. They don't have a good time at this party and that was really upsetting for Gatsby.
Chapter 7 - Daisy, Tom, Gatsby and Nick are all having lunch together. Gatsby and Daisy are having a great time together but Tom is very suspicious. Tom takes them to the city and at the end of the chapter they find out that Myrtle has been killed.
Chapter 8 - Daisy was the one who accidentally killed Myrtle and Wilson figures that Gatsby is the one who killed his wife. He then heads over to Gatsby's mansion, shoots him and shoots himself.
Chapter 9 - Nick holds a funeral for Gatsby but only a few people arrive. He runs into Tom and he tells him that he told Wilson that Gatsby killed his wife.

THEME
Greed and Wealth
Gatsby is rich but is not happy with his life
He has not achieved his true dreams.
Tom and Daisy are greedy because Daisy does not truly care about Gatsby. She only cares about the money.
After Gatsby's death, Daisy did not come to his funeral because she simply did not care about who he is as a person.
Gatsby wanted to become a better person, he wanted to grow as a person but he ended up rich. He achieved many peoples dreams (The American Dream), except his own dream.
THESIS
Gatsby was a wealthy man with many dreams but unfortunately, he was unable to achieve his own dreams. He was in love with Daisy, but she was not in love with him. She only loved him for his wealth, but Gatsby loved her for who she was.
