The first known people to inhabit the area that would one day be called Melbourne were the Wurundjeri tribe, who occupied today's Melbourne and also the Yarra River Valley.

Date: 1803
The first European to discover Port Phillip Bay was Charles Grimes, who recommended no settlement at Port Phillip Bay. They attempted a settlement but were put off by the lack of fresh water and founded Hobart.

John Batman founded the first Melbourne settlement, by signing a treaty with the Indigenous occupants. As they didn't know they were signing over their land, he was able to trick them and then kill them to force them out of the region.

Robert Hoddle completes a city map that would come to be known as the Hoddle Grid, the layout for Melbourne today.

Date: 1854
Rising tensions between Diggers in the Gold Mines and the policies employed by the government lead to 150 diggers creating a structure and opening fire on troopers. 25 diggers and 5 troopers were killed.

Melbourne ceased to be an independent colony and become one of the 6 states of the Commonwealth of Australia under the new federation.
