Chapter 7: Gingival Diseases
Gingivitis
Inflammatory lesion
Mediated by host/microorganism
Histopathogenesis of Gingivitis
Stages of Histopathogenesis
Histopathogenesis are the events that occur in the periodontal tissue that leads to development of gingivitis and periodontists.
Initial Lesion: PMN Dominated. Develops 2-4 days. Increased flow of GCF fluid.
Early Lesion: Evolves from initial lesion. After 7 days of plaque build up. T Lymphocytes accumulate. 60-70% of collagen is lost. bleeding on probing occurs
Established Lesion: early lesions develops into chronic established gingivitis lesion. Can start within 2-3 weeks after early lesion. B cells increase and T cells decrease. Gingival fibers are still attaches. Gingival margin becomes swollen. Most clinical signs are still reversible. No alveolar bone loss.
Pathogenesis of Gingivitis
The Gingival Pocket
Host Response to Gingival inflamation
Classification of Periodontal Disease
Dental Plaque-Induced Gingival Diseases
Gingivitis associated with dental plaque. Begins at the gingival margin and spreads to remaining gingiva.
Acute gingivitis occurs 1-3 weeks after continuous plaque accumulation.
Gingivitis associated with endocrine system
Puberty Gingivitis
Menstrual Cycle Gingivitis
Pregnancy Gingivitis
Diabetes mellitus associated gingivitis
Gingivitis Associated with Blood Dyscrasias
Leukemia associated gingivitis. Oral menifestations are seen as gingival bleeding and enlargement starting at interdental papilla and spreading to the attached gingiva.
Drug Influenced Gingivitis
Non-Plaque Induced Gingival Disease
Viral orgins
Specific bacteria origins
Fungal orgins
Genetic Orgins
Systemic Conditions
Reflection
I have suffered from plaque induced gingivitis before starting this dental hygiene program.
I have noticed friends who suffer from systemic related periodontitis due to smoking tobacco.
