Action plan
Short term
Standard B2 - Resources and support
Goal (What do I want to achieve?) - By the end of December this year, I will be the appointed PYP coordinator. The current coordinator has asked me to hold a short informal workshop on assessment next week (26th July).
My goal is to be able to explain the difference between summative and formative assessment.
Current situation (Current action) - I am, like everyone else here, doing the workshop which has helped me understand IB's view on assessment. I am currently working on a presentation of how to assess. I am also currently working on translating scope and sequence into Japanese.
Actions to be taken - As written before, I am currently translating all the scope and sequence documents into Japanese which takes time. I am to be finished by mid next week with the essential parts (as proposed by our PYP counselor) PSPE, language and art.
I am also going to make a presentation (power point or prezi) for the workshop. On the day of the workshop I will talk about scope and sequence.Since our school is new to PYP and Japanese people are not used to the type of framework the IB has worked out, I have to give them concrete examples so it will be easier to understand.
How to achieve the goal (Resources) - The current workshop as well as the previous workshop I did have been very informative of assessment.
Goal to be achieved by - This will and have to be finished by mid next week as the workshop is on Thursday!
Evidence of achieved goal - By tomorrow the presentation itself should be done and by Thursday it will be presented to my colleges.
Strategies to meet goal - I am working closely with my current coordinator to make sure that the translation of the scope and sequence is correct, as well as preparing for the presentation. As the Japanese teachers are new to this kind of curriculum, I propose to use my experience gained from working at schools in Sweden. Ian (who is participating in this workshop as well) will help me talk about body language, which is a big part of assessment.
How to achieve the goal (People) - I will use the shared experience from each person here and incorporate it into my knowledge and use it during my presentation. I will also ask my co-workers for help in order to make the presentation understandable.
Medium term
Standard C1 - Collaborative planning
Goal (What do I want to achieve?) - Since my assignment at my school has changed to being the link between the English and Japanese facilitators, it is necessary for me to participate in more planning and reflection meetings done by the Japanese facilitators.
One of the medium term goals is to translate the written curriculum done by the Japanese facilitators so that the English team can take part of what is happening within the school.
Current situation (Current action) - I am currently working on translating the written plans, but I only have so much time on my hands as I have many other tasks at hand.
Actions to be taken - I am currently working on tasks in a priority order. Since I am tasked to talk about assessment among other things to the teachers next week, I will start translating the plans after that.
How to achieve the goal (Resources) - As time is challenging, especially when it comes to translation, I have to become more efficient in the translation process, meaning that I am as I translating, going back to studying Japanese once again. I am currently using different dictionaries on the web.
Goal to be achieved by - I am aiming to finish translation of all units for all years by the end of summer.
Evidence of achieved goal - The evidence will be the translated plans which the English team will be able to take part of.
Strategies to meet the goal - I will use my Japanese knowledge to translate the plans. I will also need to ask the planning teachers for clarification, so there is no misunderstanding in the translation. This will result in a more accurate and understandable translation.
How to achieve the goal (People) - I will need the help of my PYP coordinator for proof reading the translations.
Long term
Standard B1 - Leadership and structure
Goal (What do I want to achieve?) - As mentioned above, I will take on the task of becoming our school's PYP coordinator. Our current coordinator is a very competent person and she is handling many things at a time. I am looking up to her very much and my goal is to become someone like her. I am aiming to be able to support the faculty staff and deepen the relationship between all the teams within the school, and in the best way possible remove language barriers between the Japanese speaking faculty members and the English speaking faculty members.
Current situation (Current action) - I am currently doing this workshop and have done another workshop. I am also in the middle of working my way through all sorts of documents to be able to understand the PYP better. I have only about five years of prior experience of working in school environments (in Sweden) and one year here in Japan. I think that my experience from my years in Sweden can play a role as the PYP framework is similar to what I was working with in Sweden. I will become the coordinator by the end of December, along with the role of being the manager of the English team.
Actions to be taken - I am aiming to study leadership. This will be a necessary step I think as I will be a coordinator and manager at the same time.
I also aim to read all the resources available about the IB. This is because I will be the one who the facilitators will come to when they need advice.
How to achieve the goal (Resources) - IB PYP resources. Leadership resources.
Goal to be achieved by - We are not verified by IB yet and are working diligently towards the goal of becoming a certified IB school. We are thinking of having the inspection by spring next year. I am working to achieve my goals - to be prepared - as I step into the role as coordinator this coming December.
Evidence of achieved goal - This will be difficult I think to know as we all strive to become a better person. If we are able to become verified, then I will know that at least some of what I have done have had an effect.
Strategies to meet the goal - I plan to use the resources available to me from the IB network. I also need to study leadership. Time is of essence since it's only a few months left. I am looking to all members of the learning environment - for their expertise - in order to make things more effective.
How to achieve the goal (People) - All member of the community are important. Collaboration is needed for a learning environment to function properly and effective. I see everyone as a needed fundamental building block. Since this will be my first job as a coordinator, it will be essential that I listen to everyone and not to do everything on my own.
Another important long term goal is inclusion, for the English team to be able to participate more often in meetings and take part of the UOIs which the Japanese teachers plan.
