The Happines Equation
- Neil Pasricha
SECRET #1:
BE HAPPY FIRST
How we think happiness is achieved
GREAT WORK --> BIG SUCCESS --> BE HAPPY
How happiness is actually achieved
BE HAPPY --> GREAT WORK --> BIG SUCCESS
Over thousands and thousands of years of human evolution, our brains have been programmed for
survival
and
not happiness
Hence why negative feelings such as fear, anxiety, stress, paranoia still persist
:fire: It is our brain's job to ensure survival, but it is our job to ensure happineess,
Attitude is the most important thing in our control. Each day we have a choice regarding the attitude we will embrace
10% of our happiness is what happens to us
90% of our happiness is based on how we react
Making
HAPPINESS
a
HABIT
Random Acts of Kindness
Completely Unplug
20-Minute Replay of Cherished Memories
Get in the Zone / Be Productive
Short Daily Walks
Meditate
Reflect on Things you're grateful for
"
When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you"
- Lao Tzu
"It's not necessarily the reality that shapes us but the lens through which we perceive reality that shapes our reality"
- William James
"
There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so"
- Shakespeare
"Happy people don't have the best of everything, they make the best of everything"
"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two imposters just the same"
Read the poem "If" - by Rudyard Kipling
SECRET #3:
REMEMBER YOU HAVE ENOUGH
More != Better
Be content with where you are and what you have
Put things in
perspective
SECRET #2:
DO IT FOR YOU
When you're motivated by extrinsic goals you're doing it for others, when you're motivated by intrinsic goals you're doing it for yourself
"As soon as you concern yourself with good or bad of others, you create an opening for maliciousness to enter. Testing, competing with, and criticizing others weakens and ultimately defeats you"
The root cause of this comparison is
lack of self confidence
You are what you are.
So stop hiding, stop apologizing, and accept yourself
No matter how many external goals you achieve, there will always be more external goals ahead. It's only the internal goals that are truly rewarding.
SECRET #6:
CREATE SPACE
Build a routine to minimize time wasted to repeated decision making
Having to many options leads to
decision fatigue
, likely resulting in no decision or a bad decision
Reduce the no. of choices/alternatives to make decisions at twice the speed
Decision Making (Time vs. Importance)
Automate
(Low Time, Low Importance): Free your brain from routine decisions like paying bills, thinking about your workout routine, choosing the best route to work, etc.
Effectuate
(Low Time, High Importance): Get 'er done. Just do these tasks, there's no decision to make. These are tasks picking up your kids, eating dinner with family, working out, etc.
Regulate
(High Time, Low Importance): Checking email, doing chores, managing calendar. These tasks should be regulated by rules that are easy to follow
Debate
(High Time, High Importance): These are important decisions (buy a house, choosing a job/spouse) that demand deep thinking
Reduce access to distractions
SECRET #4:
NEVER RETIRE
Know your
Ikigai
(your purpose or the reason you wake up each morning)
Why Work???
Work facilitates people interactions and
social stimulus
Work creates
structure for your day
. It also pays for your lifestyle
Work gives us an opportunity to
learn and grow
When you work, you become
part of something bigger than yourself
SECRET #5:
OVERVALUE YOU
Don't just maximize your gross salary. Know your salary on an hourly basis.
Often times you may be seduced by a high-paying salary, however you may not realize that you also have to spend a lot more hours at the job
SECRET #7:
JUST DO IT
Sometimes
it's easier done than done
Change your mindset to get stuff done:
CAN DO --> WANT TO DO --> DO
"An object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by a larger force".
To put another way, start doing something and you'll continue. Why? Because motivation doesn't cause action but action causes motivation
SECRET #7:
BE YOU
"The privilege of a lifetime it to become who you truly are"
- C.G. Jung
It's better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else's life with perfection
"Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony"
- Gandhi
SECRET #8:
LISTEN TO ADVICE BUT DON'T TAKE IT
Advice is never objectively true in all situation. In fact, often they conflict
Birds of a feather flock together. Opposite attract
You're never too old to learn. You can't teach an old dog new tricks
Defense wins championships. The best defense is offense
Clothes make the man. Never judge a book by it's cover
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Out of sight, out of mind
The best things in life are free. You get what you paid for
The early bird gets the worm. Good things come to those who wait
Remember to know when to take advice and when to stop taking them. Advice only reflects the thoughts of the advisor not yours
You make up your own mind.
You must become creatively indifferent to all advice. Listen to it, but decide what to do yourself
